Review: Confessions Of A Hostie and More Confessions of a Hostie by Danielle Hugh*

Reading is a passion of mine. If I'm in a bad mood or I'm tired, if I'm in one of my 'depressive stages' (as mum likes to call them) or I'm simply just bored, for me, picking up a good book is often my saviour. I'm quite lucky, I guess - when I delve into a new book, I forget everything else. I jump into the world of the protagonist and it can be a while before I realise that I've not eaten or slept in hours. Time eludes me when I'm reading. I'm usually tucked up in bed, unable to sleep reading a book that I get so hooked into that I cannot put it down - even when sleep is all my body wants to do and the feeling of insomnia was a feeling that passed an hour and a half ago. In fact, right now is one of those moments. I woke at 2am and after restlessly fidgeting in my bed for a good twenty minutes I'd decided that I quite obviously wasn't going to get back to sleep anytime soon. I checked my Twitter, my Facebook, My Instagram, for any new posts and after that failed, I checked my email. 1 new mail. 1 new mail with two attachments, two new books for me to read. Of course, interest became the better of me and I have now been awake for an additional hour and a half, reading. I've managed to read almost half of the first book 'Confessions of a Hostie' and I just haven't wanted to put it down!

Packed with stories that are separated from each other, yet still neatly managed into a sort-of timeline through the book, This literally is the confessions of an Air Hostess. A sort of diary, I guess, of  adventures and stories and situations that she's been a part of during her time up in the air. I'm glued to the book, I don't want to go back to sleep, I just want to open up that PDF again, find where I left off and continue reading until I either fall asleep or the sun comes up and it's time to get out of bed.

Danielle Hugh has written her experiences in first person, as you would expect from a story like this, however her style of writing makes it so much more readable. Excuse my lack of 'literary terms' here, but I'd say it's very matted-of-fact, she knows what she wants to say and she doesn't 'fluff it up' if you will. There is a strong theme of witty humor throughout the whole book and to me this just makes it even more special, I'm dying to get back to it and find out what happened to her next. Within the first couple of chapters (which are all lovely and manageable at around 3-5 pages each), she'd already described times where she'd gotten her period during a flight, shopped insanely even though sleep deprived in a stopover in Singapore and her misfortunes at having to clean up a rude drunk man's sick. I'm even more intrigued about her life now than I was before I started reading and believe me, that's an achievement as I normally hate these kind of books. I'm normally all about the fictitious  novels that drag me blindfolded into the world of a made up protagonist, not those of people who write about their own experiences. Honestly I usually find them dull and boring, just like I do when reading non-fiction books (I just can't get into them like I can a good novel). Not only, with these two books, was I first intrigued by the nature of Danielle's occupation, but I was then hooked within the first couple of pages. Her writing style is so relatable and the little anecdotes from her travels are something that I'm currently thoroughly enjoying reading! 

After reading a little more this morning, I can definitely say that it was not my sleep-deprived brain that was telling me how good this book is. It's genuinely such a great read and each of the individual stories are interesting in their own ways. I'm beyond hooked and have actually had to turn my iPad off for a while so that I don't go all square-eyed from staring at the screen for too long. I'm only on the first book yet I have SO many questions for Danielle and can't wait to share my interview with her in a separate post for you all to read!

More Confessions of a Hostie, is Danielle's second book in this series. It's released on November 4th and will be available from Amazon, the iBook store, BN.com and most online booksellers, just as the first installment is. This book is just as good as the first, if not better. The stories - or 'episodes' as Danielle calls them - are as light-hearted and entertaining to read as the first book. Some things are repeated (as you would expect from a sequel like this) as it is not a book where you would necessarily need to read the first to understand what is going on, but this doesn't change my opinion on how much of a great read I think this is. I especially like the episodes that describe troublesome passengers, having flown myself many times before, it's amazing to read about these from the Air Steward's point of view. I've even read my Mum a couple of the episodes and she's now pestering me to finish so that she can read it. 

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading both of these books and I am desperate to email over some questions to Danielle about her life as a 'Hosite' - not only have I got book related questions, but also beauty ones too! As I mentioned previously, I will have these in a separate post with an interview with Danielle to come soon!
